NFL Owners Vote to Keep ‘Tush push’ Play Legal for 2025 Season

The controversial ‘Tush Push’ play will remain a part of the NFL for at least another season. At the NFL spring meeting on Wednesday, Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie successfully defended the play, also known as the “Brotherly shove,” against a proposed ban.

While 22 of the 32 team owners voted in favor of banning the play, the proposal fell short of the 24 votes needed for approval, according to league rules.

the Green Bay Packers spearheaded the effort to outlaw the ‘Tush Push,’ arguing that it poses an needless risk to player safety. However, NFL statistics have not substantiated this claim.

The Packers initially presented the proposal at the owners’ meeting in April, garnering 16 votes. Thier second attempt failed to reach the required threshold.

The ‘Tush Push’ is a short-yardage play designed to gain a first down or score a touchdown. It involves the center snapping the ball to the quarterback, who is then pushed forward by teammates, typically a running back and tight end, to drive through the defensive line.

The Eagles have executed the ‘Tush Push’ with remarkable success.During the previous season, thay converted 39 of 48 attempts (81.3 percent), a key factor in their Super bowl LIX victory last February.

Jeffrey Lurie was accompanied at the meeting by former Eagles center Jason Kelce, who presented arguments against banning the play to the team owners for nearly 45 minutes.

Kelce, who spent his entire NFL career (2011-2023) with Philadelphia, explained the mechanics of the play and argued that, in his extensive experience, it is not “excessively dangerous.”

In other rule changes, team owners approved allowing teams to attempt a short kickoff at any point in the game if they are trailing. Previously, this was only permitted in the final quarter.

Under the new rule, the short kick will be executed from the 34-yard line, instead of the 35, to increase the likelihood of the kicking team recovering the ball.

In 2024, teams recovered the ball on only six percent of short kickoff attempts, according to league data.

“Excessively dangerous.”
