Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment, informed staff that the changes aim to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities,” according to an email obtained by IGN. The Black Panther game, which was announced in 2023, had no firm release date or specific gameplay details revealed.

Cliffhanger Games was led by kevin Stephens, formerly of Monolith Productions, the studio behind middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. Stephens and other Monolith veterans formed the studio after Warner Bros. Games canceled a new IP codenamed Legacy in 2021. Monolith later worked on a Wonder Woman game before also being shut down earlier in the year.

“We’re dedicated to delivering fans a definitive and authentic Black Panther experiance, giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game,” Stephens stated last year. “Wakanda is a rich Super Hero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do.”

EA’s Broader Restructuring

“Sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.”

The cancellation of the Black Panther game is part of a larger series of cuts at EA, including those at Respawn Entertainment. The publisher is concentrating on its major franchises, such as The Sims and EA Sports FC,and moving away from new projects and spin-offs,including a Titanium project that was reportedly in early development. EA has promised investors a significant update to Apex Legends and confirmed that Battlefield 6 will be released before the end of March 2026.

EA is also developing an Iron Man game at EA Motive. Miele’s email reportedly reassured staff that the company remains committed to that project, as well as the third game in the Star Wars Jedi trilogy.
