Rare Galaxy Merger Discovered in Cosmic Void

An international team of scientists has observed a rare merger of dwarf galaxies in an almost empty region of the universe, offering insights into galactic evolution in low-density environments.

Researchers from the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) are part of the international scientific team that has been studying “an extraordinary dwarf galaxies that dance together in the middle of nowhere” in a cosmic void. According to the IAC, these galaxies provide “a unique outlook on individual interactions and the evolution of galaxies located in very small density environments.”

The Calar Alto Void Integral-Field Treasury Survey (Cavity) project, led by the University of Granada, discovered the ongoing fusion between two dwarf galaxies in one of the universe’s least populated regions.

«Galaxies mergers are events that play a key role in how they grow, change and form new stars. When galaxies collide, gravitational forces cause gas and stars exchanges, stellar formation bursts and structural alterations, “added the research institution.

While mergers of massive galaxies are well-documented, “capturing such an event between low dwarf galaxies is remarkably rare, especially in such an empty habitat.”
