Dutch Jews Speak Out Against Gaza War in New Petition: A Moral Stand

A Growing Chorus of Dissent: Jewish Voices Question Israeli Policies

A group of prominent Dutch jews, including author Judith Belinfante, sociologist Abram de Swaan, and writer Chaja Polak, have initiated a petition urging the Israeli government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, to urgently end the ongoing conflict and cease actions that are destroying the living environment of the Palestinians. the petition, already signed by over a thousand individuals, including former Vice-Prime Minister Lodewijk Asscher and comedian Micha Wertheim, reflects a growing unease within the Jewish community regarding the current trajectory of Israeli policies.

This action comes amidst continued concerns over the unresolved hostage situation and recent incidents, such as the attack on a Palestinian aid convoy, which have further intensified the debate surrounding the conflict. The petition underscores a desire to see a resolution that prioritizes the well-being of all civilians involved.

From Silence to Solidarity: A Personal Journey

Judith Belinfante, who was born in hiding during World War II, explained the impetus behind the petition. She articulated that the lingering hostage crisis, coupled with the attack on the aid convoy, pushed her and others to take a stand. She stated:

I think in part without a doubt. We outside of Israel have no influence on the Israeli government. It is a nasty feeling that you can’t do anything, while what you see happen is terrible. We have ofen thought: we or will we not? It has to be now.

Belinfante acknowledged the delay in taking action, attributing it to the past context of the Holocaust and the initial perception of Israel as a safe haven. She elaborated on her personal evolution, stating that for a long time, she felt loyal to Israel, viewing it as a counterweight to the horrors of the past. Though, she now believes that taking a moral stance is the truest form of loyalty.

No,I think it is indeed loyal to take a moral position.

The Genocide Question and the Plight of Gaza

Belinfante also addressed the complexities surrounding the Genocide question, noting that the dire situation in Gaza played a significant role in her decision to speak out. The lack of access and the seemingly inescapable conditions for the people of Gaza deeply impacted her viewpoint.

Taking Action: A Call for Change

The petition has been formally submitted to key political bodies, including the Prime Minister, the Dutch Parliament, the European Commission, and the European Council. While acknowledging the limitations of the petition’s direct impact, Belinfante emphasized its role as a catalyst for broader engagement. The petition has been translated into English to encourage support from other European organizations. A member of the European Parliament from the Social Democrats has pledged to raise the issue for discussion.

The initiators hope that the petition will contribute to a shift in perspective and foster a more constructive dialog about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Belinfante expressed her desire for Israel to once again be a place of hope and security for future generations.

This is indeed one of the few things you can do about it. I think it’s a big step to dare to dare and am happy that people pick it up. It is indeed about the future. For me, at my age, I want the future to be the future for the younger generations. I want Israel to be a place again, not the fearful of young people.

Context: Shifting Public Opinion

This petition emerges at a time when public opinion in the netherlands, and across Europe, is increasingly scrutinizing Israeli policies. Recent polls indicate a growing concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories. This initiative by Dutch Jewish figures adds a significant voice to the ongoing debate, challenging the Israeli government to reconsider its approach and prioritize a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
