A rare gene mutation in sperm from a Danish donor has potentially exposed dozens of children across Europe to a significantly increased risk of cancer. While Dutch clinics are likely unaffected, the possibility of Dutch couples seeking treatment in Belgium remains a concern. In Belgium, 52 children were conceived using the affected donor’s sperm.
Across Europe, at least 67 children from 46 families in eight countries have been conceived using sperm from the same donor. The mutation has been identified in 23 of these children, with ten already diagnosed with cancer. The sperm, provided by the European Sperm Bank (ESB) between 2008 and 2015, has prompted concern among health officials.
State Secretary Vincent Karremans (Youth, Prevention and Sport) told RTL News that it appears “for the time being that no Dutch families have been involved.” He added, “ESB indicates that the clinics involved have been informed and no Dutch clinics have been approached.”
However, Ties van der Meer, chairman of the Donorkind Foundation, cautions that “It is not entirely excluding that Dutch children have also been conceived with the sperm of the Danish donor.” He suggests that “Dutch couples went to a Belgian clinic for a fertility trajectory, for exmaple because it is still possible to work with an anonymous sperm donor.”
Increased cancer Risk
The gene mutation, known as TP53, dramatically elevates the risk of cancer. Belgian professor Joris Vermeesch of KU Leuven stated in De Standaard that women born with the mutation face a “100 percent chance of getting cancer in their lives,” while for men, the risk is 70 percent.
“It is not entirely excluding that Dutch children have also been conceived with the sperm of the Danish donor.”
Sperm Donor Shortage
due to a stop at foreign donors, the UMC Utrecht is struggling with a shortage of sperm donors. Thécla Viring tells in this video what that does to you if you have a desire to have children:
