Europe’s Busiest Air Routes Revealed: Dublin-London Heathrow Takes Second Place
Dublin to London Heathrow was the second busiest international air route operated within Europe last year, according to figures compiled by aviation data consultancy OAG. The route carried around 2.35 million passengers, just behind the Rome Fiumicino to Madrid route, which had approximately 2.41 million seats.
Disruptions and Operators
Flights between Dublin and London Heathrow were carried out by Aer Lingus and British Airways. However, last summer’s strikes by Aer Lingus pilots caused disruptions to their schedules.
Top Domestic and International Routes
The busy traffic didn’t stop at international routes. The Barcelona to Palma link held the title as the busiest domestic route in Europe, with close to 2.9 million seats. Meanwhile, Heathrow to New York ranked as the busiest route from Europe to a destination outside the region, logging more than 4 million seats. This route placed tenth globally.
Global Perspectives
Globally, the story was different. Hong Kong to Taipei in Taiwan took the top spot with 6.8 million seats last year. In 2023, Kuala Lumpur to Singapore Changi ruled the charts but slipped to fourth place in 2024 with nearly 5.4 million seats.
What Defines a Busiest Route?
The busiest air routes are determined by the largest volume of scheduled airline seats during the year. This metric includes flights in both directions on each route.
Airline Performance: Flight Cancellations
In terms of flight cancellations, data analytics group Cirium released new insights. Ryanair ranked ninth in Europe, canceling 2,932 flights last year from over 1 million in total.
German carrier Lufthansa led the chart with 12,220 cancellations from 419,682 flights. British Airways followed closely with 7,117 cancellations from a schedule comprising 310,631 flights.
