The Israeli military (IDF) says Ali Larijani, head of Iran’s Supreme Security Council, and Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the Basji militia, have been killed.
Larijani has been Iran’s top security chief since August last year and is considered one of Iran’s top leaders since the war started two weeks ago, writes NTB.
The Basji militia is a paramilitary group under Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, which has often been used to crack down on protests inside Iran.
Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz also says in a statement that he has been informed by the military that Iran’s security chief Larijani has been killed. Katz has also stated that Soleimani has been killed.
The information has not been confirmed by Iran. Iranian state media reports that a statement from Ali Larijani will be published soon.
The attacks are said to have been aimed at the cities of Tehran, Shiraz and Tabriz.
Also Akram al-Ajouri, a senior leader in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), is said to be among the targets.
On Tuesday morning, there were supposed to have been powerful explosions in Iran’s capital Tehran, reports AFP. Some of the explosions are said to have been heard in the center of the city.
Attacks on Dubai and Doha
Early on Tuesday, the authorities in Dubai sent out an emergency alert on mobile phones telling people to seek immediate cover. Soon after, three explosions were heard, writes the AFP news agency.
Several explosions have also been reported in Qatar’s capital, Doha. The country’s Ministry of the Interior reports that a fire has broken out in an industrial area.
In Abu Dhabi, a Pakistani citizen is said to have been killed by shrapnel that fell from a intercepted missile, according to AFP.
Report of attack on embassy
Reports have come from Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, that the US embassy has been subjected to a powerful attack.
According to security sources, the attack on Tuesday night will be the most intense against the city since the US and Israel went to war against Iran.
The attack occurred shortly after reports that a drone had hit the roof of the luxury hotel Royal Tulip Al-Rasheed, which is located in the same district as the embassy.
The US embassy in Baghdad has reportedly been hit by an attack.
Tanker attacked off the Emirates
A tanker anchored outside the city of Fujairah in the emirate of the same name was hit by an unknown projectile last night. This is stated by the British center for maritime trade, United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), according to NTB.
The attack caused minor structural damage to the vessel.
It has not been reported that the crew has been injured, according to the statement. Fujairah, located on the Gulf of Oman, is among the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates.
