Drought & Agriculture: Interest-Free Loans for Farmers | Presidential Office Update

The General Secretariat of the Syrian Presidential Office convened an extended ministerial meeting on Saturday to discuss the plans of the Ministry of Agriculture for the winter season and to find ways to support farmers in view of the increasing challenges that the agricultural sector experiences on the basis of the continuing drought.

Agriculture Minister Amjad Badr presented the reality of the sector and pointed out the difficulties in providing fuels, fertilizers and pesticides that affect agricultural production.

He also proposed to offer interest -free loans for farmers, whereby the ministry is supposed to create a detailed study to determine the target groups.

For his part, the general secretary of the presidential office, Ali Kida, called for the creation of a comprehensive national strategic plan, which enables the coordination of efforts between the ministries involved to ensure an effective and sustainable reaction to the agricultural crisis.

Finance Minister Muhammad Barniya confirmed the willingness of his ministry to provide the necessary financing immediately after receiving the study, while Energy Minister Muhammad al-Bashir emphasized the willingness of his ministry to provide the necessary energy sources to support agricultural production.

It was agreed to hold a debriefing next week to check the implementation of the recommendations and ensure that the ministries involved comply with the agreed steps.
