The first day of qualifying for the 2026 Australian Open was generally favorable to the French, notably with the qualification of Titouan Droguet (photo) and the returning Fiona Ferro.
While the cold winter weather rages in France, the sun and blue of Australia accompany the start of the champions’ season. These images are already warming the hearts of tennis fans. On the other side of the world, the first Grand Slam tournament of the new year 2026 has already started.
For the French competing in the “qualifiers” of the Australian Open, things are off to a pretty good start. The recent winner of Pro A with Boulogne-sur-Mer, Titouan Droguetwas one of the first winners of the day with a nice performance at the expense of the number 21 seed in the table, the Chilean Nicolas Jarry (6/4, 6/3), former world number 16.

Pierre-Hugues Herbert et Luca Van Assche have also overcome this first obstacle. “P2H” defeated the Dutchman Guy Den Ouden in three sets (3/6, 6/3, 6/2). The youngest of the duo dismissed a seeded player, the Tunisian Moez Echargui (n°22), 6/4, 6/4.

Among the women, only one Frenchwoman managed to win. Alice Ramé, Selena Janicijevic, Jessica Ponchet, Alice Tubello et Ksenia Efremovawho were playing their very first “AusOpen” in the big leagues, were eliminated.

More Fiona Ferrowho made her return to Melbourne after missing out in 2025 (a wrist injury has bothered her for a long time since July 2024), overwhelmed the Korean Yeonwoo Ku (6/3, 6/2). The Czech Linda Fruhvirtova will be her next opponent.
Note that on Tuesday, one of the first rounds of the women’s singles will pit two French women, Kristina Mladenovic has Chloe Paquet.
