Delivery Driver Facing Sentencing for Concealing €54,000 Worth of Drugs
A 31-year-old delivery van driver from Mallow, County Cork, is set to be sentenced in just over a month for concealing a significant amount of illegal drugs worth €54,000 inside a household appliance.
Martin Lleshi’s Arrest and Court Appearance
Martin Lleshi appeared at Cork Circuit Criminal Court via video link from prison. His case involves the receipt of a postal package containing cannabis and cocaine, which he attempted to conceal during delivery.
Lleshi’s senior counsel, Elizabeth O’Connell, sought to expedite his sentencing and requested a prison governor’s report. Judge Helen Boyle concurred with this request and deferred the sentence hearing to February 28.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Detective Garda Emmet Long brought charges against Lleshi, the most severe of which, under Section 15A of the Misuse of Drugs Act, could result in a minimum 10-year prison sentence, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
The detective stated that Lleshi was found in possession of cannabis and cocaine valued at over €54,000 for sale or supply at Glasheen Road, Cork, on August 29, 2024.
Bail Refusals
Lleshi’s attempts to secure bail were unsuccessful. First, he was denied bail at Cork District Court, and his High Court appeal was also rejected.
Detective Garda Long opposed bail, arguing that Lleshi, being an Albanian national without strong ties to Ireland, posed a flight risk.
Operational Details
The package was part of a joint operation involving various Garda units and Revenue officers. It was a controlled delivery meant to ascertain the source of the drugs being distributed in the area.
Detective Garda Long testified that the package contained a household appliance with a substantial amount of illegal substances hidden inside. Crucially, the recipient had no idea that the package was being delivered.
Driver’s Role
Earlier hearings revealed that Lleshi was employed as a delivery driver in Cork. He was also involved in photographing addresses where deliveries could be made, indicating his participation in the distribution network.
Conclusion and Implications
Martin Lleshi’s case highlights the risks involved in drug trafficking operations and the importance of collaborative law-enforcement efforts. His sentencing will likely shape the approach taken towards similar cases in the future.
