The Columbus City Council has approved a $1.3 billion budget for 2026, focusing on key areas such as affordable housing, public safety, and neighborhood development. The approval followed weeks of public hearings and council discussions, highlighting the city’s priorities and challenges.

Council President Pro Tempore Elizabeth Brown stated, “This budget reflects our commitment to addressing the critical needs of our residents while investing in the future of Columbus.” The budget allocates notable funds to initiatives aimed at increasing affordable housing options, enhancing community safety, and improving infrastructure in underserved neighborhoods.

One of the major highlights of the budget is the $75 million earmarked for affordable housing projects.This includes funding for the construction of new affordable units, as well as support for existing programs that help low-income residents secure housing. “We recognise the urgent need for more affordable housing in our city,” saeid Councilmember emmanuel Remy. “This investment will help ensure that more Columbus residents have access to safe and stable housing.”

In the realm of public safety, the budget allocates $450 million to the Columbus Division of Police, focusing on community policing initiatives and crime prevention programs. The funding will also support the recruitment and training of new officers, as well as investments in technology and equipment. “Public safety is our top priority,” said Mayor Andrew Ginther. “This budget provides the resources necessary to keep our communities safe and secure.”

Neighborhood improvements are another key focus of the budget, with $150 million allocated to projects such as street repairs, park renovations, and community center upgrades. these investments are aimed at enhancing the quality of life in Columbus neighborhoods and creating more vibrant and livable communities. “We are committed to investing in our neighborhoods and ensuring that all residents have access to quality amenities and services,” said Councilmember Shayla Favor.

Debate and Dissent

Despite the broad support for the budget, some council members and community advocates raised concerns about certain aspects of the plan.
