Urgent Humanitarian Crisis in North Kivu: DRC’s Fighting Intensifies

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) faces a severe humanitarian crisis as the conflict between the Armed Forces of the DRC and their allies continues to escalate against the March 23 Movement (M23). This intensification has resulted in numerous casualties and a surge in medical emergencies.

Strained Healthcare Facilities

The health center in one of the affected areas has been overwhelmed by nearly 250 hospitalizations, surpassing its capacity of 147 beds. Humanitarian coordinator Bruno Lemarquis has drawn attention to the situation, emphasizing the need to expand medical capabilities to aid the wounded.

To address the strain on medical facilities, several injured individuals have been evacuated to Bukavu, located in the province of South Kivu. These logistical efforts aim to provide necessary medical care to those affected by the ongoing violence.

Displacement of Civilians

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has issued an urgent call for aid to support the influx of displaced individuals in North Kivu. Since January 6, 2025, more than 34,000 new displaced persons have sought refuge around Goma, and the total displacement since January 1st of 2025 is estimated at over 120,000.

Affected Zones

The Masisi health zone, comprising areas such as Masisi center, Lushebere, Loashi, Bukombo, and Katale, and the Kirotshe zone, including Mushaki, Shasha, Bitonga, Murambi, and Kabingu, have experienced significant population displacement due to the conflict. These movements highlight the dire conditions civilians face and the urgency of addressing their needs.

Security Concerns in Goma and Surrounding Areas

The security situation in Goma and its surroundings remains tense, with ongoing battles in areas like Sake. Bomb explosions and other violent incidents in Mugunga, Bulengo, and Lushagala have heightened panic and led to further population displacement. Surrounding towns, including Mubambiro and Nzulo, are gradually becoming uninhabited as the violence escalates.

According to UNOCHA, between 200,000 and 300,000 people are believed to be displaced, although this figure is subject to change due to the ongoing instability. The already challenging humanitarian situation in North Kivu is becoming increasingly complex, necessitating immediate and sustained support.

Impact on Refugee Camps

The recent bombings in the Nyiragongo area on January 23 claimed the lives of two civilians. One projectile hit the Bushagara camp for displaced persons, while the other landed near the Mudja camp. Although the damage to these camps was minimal, the potential for future incidents underscores the vulnerability of these populations.

Current Battlefronts

The fighting continues on key axes, including Kasengesi-Mubambiro around Sake and Kanyamahoro-Kibumba in Nyiragongo territory. Local sources have reported the sounds of heavy and light weapons fire almost continuously from Friday night until the present day, further exacerbating the fear and panic among the local populace.

On the Kibumba side, north of Goma, the DRC Armed Forces successfully repelled an M23 attempt to launch an attack on their strategic positions in Kanyamahoro and Kilima-Nyoka, located within the Buhumba groupment.
