Surviving a Mountain Accident: Dr. Shirlee Xie’s Journey to Recovery

Life can change in an instant. This is the poignant story of Dr. Shirlee Xie, a dedicated doctor from Edina, Minn., whose world was turned upside down during a hiking trip in Switzerland that should have been a picturesque adventure.

The Unforeseen Trauma

On a seemingly ordinary day in September 2024, Dr. Xie and her husband, John Kriz, were enjoying the spectacular mountain trails of Switzerland. However, the relaxed atmosphere took a horrifying turn when Shirley stumbled upon an unstable section of the trail.

Xie, who was leading the hike, fell about 300 feet down the mountain. Her quick thinking husband, John, rushed down to her aid, but the extent of her injuries left her multiple injured, including severe fractures to her spine, which left her completely paralyzed from the chest down.

The Path to Recovery

The road to recovery began amidst physical pain and emotional turmoil. Once stabilized, Xie was flown to a hospital in Switzerland. The doctors discovered after 20 hours of surgery that she had also sustained a traumatic brain injury, broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and multiple fractures on her vertebrae. The prognosis was daunting, but Dr. Xie’s determination to fight back never wavered.

Upon regaining consciousness, Shirlee’s initial response to the news of her paralysis was remarkably stoic. She remembers thinking, “This is what it is.” She continued: “I knew that there wasn’t anything that could be done to reverse it. I think it was just like, ‘This is what it is’.”

Despite the overwhelming challenges, Xie’s family and friends were a pillar of strength. For instance, her husband consistently visited her sleeping unit several times, her children (Maddie, 9, and Oliver, 11) were told about the tragedy merely a day before she left Switzerland to prevent a long-term trauma.

Hospital and Physical Therapy Journey

Physical therapy was rigorous, involving at least three hours daily of intensive treatments. Xie recounts the arduous journey of relearning basic tasks like dressing, showering, and brushing her teeth. The intense occupational therapy focused on regaining hand function and mastering how to maneuver a wheelchair.

Prior to her accident, Xie had always wanted to pursue a career in medicine. Initially, she aspired to be an emergency room doctor, but after her medical student rotations in the ER, she realized she preferred the more methodical pace of practicing internal medicine. She always knew she wanted to be a doctor.

Although COVID presented an unprecedented challenge for her with 100% of her patients desperately needing her and many losing the battle to COVID-Xie portrayed this experience as heart-wrenching.

Despite the devastating turn of events, the support from her family and medical staff at Abbott’s Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute helped keep her spirits high. Her tremendous will to get back to practicing medicine, bolstered her positive outlook.

Future Goals

After her discharge from Courage Kenny, Dr. Xie continues her rehabilitation at her temporary apartment in Edina. She’s already gearing up to return to her medical practice by summer 2025. “I can’t imagine my life not practicing medicine,” she says. “I’ve been doing this for 20 years, and I don’t know what else I would do.”

Her primary goal is to work with her physical therapist to strengthen her body and regain whatever neurological function she can. She’s also determined not to let her paralysis define her. While the future holds many uncertainties, her unwavering spirit and loved ones’ support will continue to propel her forward on her gripping journey to recovery.
