Dorival Júnior’s Future as Brazil Coach in Question After Argentina Loss

Humiliating defeat sparks discussions about potential replacements and a shift in CBF strategy.

The Fallout from Buenos Aires: Dorival Júnior on Thin Ice

The Brazilian national team’s recent defeat against Argentina has placed coach Dorival Júnior under immense pressure. The loss, suffered this Tuesday in Buenos Aires, may prove to be the catalyst for a change in leadership. Even before the match, CBF President Ednaldo Rodrigues faced increasing scrutiny from allies regarding the coach’s future, with concerns extending beyond mere results to encompass overall team performance.

filipe Luís: A Scaloni-esque Solution for Brazil?

amidst discussions about potential replacements, one name has emerged prominently: Filipe Luís, formerly of Flamengo.Rodrigues, who recently secured his reelection, has reportedly heard Luís’s name frequently in meetings concerning the future direction of the national team. The idea is that Filipe Luís could emulate Lionel Scaloni‘s success with Argentina, bringing a fresh outlook and strong rapport with the players, despite limited coaching experience.

There is already a ready speech that Filipe Luís could be in Brazil what Lionel Scaloni has been to Argentina. A newbie technician, without experience, but who adds the fact that he has a history in the national team, a good relationship with cast and opening for new ideas.

The proposed structure mirrors Argentina’s setup, which includes several former national team players in key coaching roles. Though, it remains uncertain whether Luís would accept the position, and Rodrigues is reportedly hesitant to disrupt Flamengo’s preparations for the FIFA Club World Cup in june and July. Moreover, Brazil faces crucial World Cup qualifying matches against Ecuador and Paraguay in early June [[3]].

Other Contenders and Shifting Timelines

Before the Argentina debacle, the prevailing sentiment was that Dorival Júnior would remain in charge until at least June, providing the CBF with more adaptability. However, the magnitude of the defeat has accelerated the timeline for potential changes.

Carlo Ancelotti, who was a frontrunner for the job after the Qatar World Cup, remains a name of interest. Even though he renewed his contract with Real Madrid, the agreement concludes in July after the Club World Cup. Some within the CBF believe Rodrigues might be willing to wait and see what Ancelotti decides. Though, the recent loss has injected further uncertainty into the situation.

Other names that have been suggested to Ednaldo Rodrigues include Roger Machado, currently managing Internacional, and Rogério Ceni, who is with Bahia. Machado is seen as a strong advocate against racism, aligning with a key focus of Rodrigues’s reelection campaign. Ceni, meanwhile, has support from within Rodrigues’s circle, especially from figures associated with Bahia.

Urgency and the Road to the World Cup 2026

While these option candidates represent immediate, albeit potentially uninspiring, options, the humiliating defeat against their biggest rivals has seemingly forced the CBF’s hand, potentially expediting Dorival’s departure and altering Rodrigues’s plans. The next coach will have just over a year to prepare the team for the World Cup 2026 [[1]], a tournament Brazil has won a record five times [[2]].
