A recent drone video captured an interaction between a pod of dolphins and great white sharks off the coast of Southern California, raising the age-old question: who would win in a fight?
The hypothetical battle between 100 men and a gorilla has been a popular topic, with many believing the men would eventually win through sheer numbers, albeit with casualties. But in the natural world, real encounters between species occur frequently. A recent video highlights one such interaction: a pod of dolphins encountering great white sharks.
The footage, captured by drone by great white shark documenter,Carlos Gauna (aka The Malibu Artist), in Southern California, reveals an interesting dynamic.Despite the great white’s reputation as an apex predator, the arrival of seven dolphins changes the equation. As Gauna explains:
“Dolphins, unlike most species, they don’t shy away from sharks.Actually, they’ll frequently enough approach them directly. Hear, a pod of seven dolphins closes in on a shark from behind. At first, the shark startles, and veers away. Notice how the dolphins bunch tightly together as they pass – a strategy to appear larger and more intimidating. Strength in numbers on full display.
“As the dolphins press forward, the shark circles behind them – a classic shark behavior. But suddenly, a second shark appears. Once again, the dolphins startle it. Just like before, this shark veers off, and tries to fall in behind. The dolphins keep moving, until they meet a third shark. Once again, they bunch tightly, and the shark circles back.”

The video suggests that while a single shark might be a formidable opponent, a coordinated group of dolphins can deter even these apex predators.but who would truly win in a head-to-head battle?
For now,it’s a toss-up.
