Dodgers Not Pursuing Nolan Arenado, Max Muncy Remains at Third Base
The Los Angeles Dodgers have repeatedly made it clear that they are not interested in trading for St. Louis Cardinals star third baseman Nolan Arenado, despite recent speculation. This comes as a surprise to some, as Arenado is a talented player who could potentially bolster the Dodgers’ lineup.
Why the Dodgers Passed on Arenado
While Arenado is a talented player, several factors likely contributed to the Dodgers’ decision.
Firstly, the Dodgers already have Max Muncy firmly entrenched at third base. Muncy, entering his second year of a two-year extension, has repeatedly expressed his desire to remain with the Dodgers and has shown continued production at the plate.
Secondly, Arenado’s hefty contract — a remaining $74 million over three years — might be more of a burden than a benefit for a Dodgers team already focused on payroll considerations.
Finally, Arenado’s offensive performance has dipped slightly since his third-place MVP finish in 2022. While he remains a solid player, the Dodgers may not be convinced that the added cost justifies the potential marginal gains.
Dodgers Priorities for 2024
With Arenado off the table, the Dodgers seem focused on bolstering their outfield. They are reportedly heavily interested in bringing back free agent Teoscar Hernandez and have already signed Michael Conforto to a one-year deal.
