The Minister of Health, Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo, is the most powerful in Gustavo Petro’s government; At least, the official who has been accompanying the head of state for the longest time, despite the constant cabinet shake-ups. His power—judging by the most recent complaint by Green Alliance congresswoman Katherine Miranda—transcends from proximity to the president to contracts.
“The family of Minister Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo has received more than $3,000 million from the Colombian State since Gustavo Petro came to power,” denounced Miranda, who investigated and found several members of the family of the renowned doctor from Tolima working in the State.
“The sister-in-law: María Clara Berrocal, wife of Omar Jaramillo (the minister’s brother), signed four contracts with the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) between 2023 and 2026 for more than $390 million,” Miranda reported.
And he reported that Camilo Andrés Jaramillo Berrocal, another nephew, has signed 12 contracts with entities such as the Regional Railway Company, for more than $1.4 billion.
In 2023, Jaramillo Berrocal was sanctioned by the Attorney General’s Office for six months and, in addition, charged with undue interest in the execution of contracts and illicit enrichment in the Odebrecht case. Even so, he continued contracting with the State, he said.
The list is long. “The minister’s stepson, Sebastián Laverde Gómez, was a contractor for the Administrator of the Resources of the General Health Social Security System (Adres) for almost $97 million. Yes, the entity that manages health resources” to a Bogotá congressman.
The minister’s brother, Omar Jaramillo Martínez, also signed a contract with the Comptroller General of the Republic for $38 million.
And now, the minister’s son, Alejandro Jaramillo Gómez, has been director of ProColombia in the United Kingdom since August 2024 with income exceeding $40 million per month, “that is, close to $720 million in total.”
Nor can we forget that Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo’s wife, Beatriz Eugenia Gómez, is deputy superintendent for Health Service Providers and has earned approximately $500 million in that position.
Miranda, visibly upset, asked: “Are we facing a family clan benefiting from public resources? More than $3,000 million for a single family, while the country faces a deep crisis in the health system, and Colombians expect medicines and care.”
Faced with this scenario, the Bogotá congresswoman, who supported Petro in the 2022 elections, estimated that “the change went badly, it promised to end the clans, but here the power changed was in the surname, it stayed in the Jaramillo family. What a shame!”
Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo is a personal friend of Gustavo Petro since the former was a councilor of Ibagué for the Liberal Party and the latter was part of the M-19 guerrilla. Let us remember that Mary Luz Herrán, the ex-wife of the current president, told SEMANA that Jaramillo visited her during several weekends when she was in jail.
