Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is calling on President Donald Trump to “act now” to end ICE’s operations in the city.
– How many Americans will have to die or be seriously injured before this operation ends, asks Frey during a press conference.
He says 15,000 people peacefully demonstrated in the city’s streets on Friday, which he says reflects the city’s and the nation’s founding principles. The “military forces and masked agents” occupying the city’s streets are the opposite of those principles, he continues.
– We have seen similar operations in other places, in other countries, but not here in the United States – not in this way, that an American city is invaded by its own government, says Frey.
City Police Chief Brian O’Hara says during the same press conference that the man shot to death by federal agents on Saturday is a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident. O’Hara further says that the police “believe” that the man is an American citizen.
