In a significant loss for British entertainment, Diane Langton, the actress renowned for her iconic roles in various television shows, films, and West End productions, passed away at the age of 77.

Known for her roles in Carry On and Only Fools And Horses, Langton left an indelible mark across multiple genres. She portrayed the flamboyant Marlena “Nana” McQueen in Hollyoaks and Bev Williams, the mother of Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins), in EastEnders. She also starred in the period police show Heartbeat.

Shane Collins, Langton’s agent, shared the news on Wednesday: “I am sad to say that Diane passed away this morning. Diane had a rich and remarkable career, appearing on stage, in films, and on television, including playing the iconic Nana McQueen in Hollyoaks from 2007 until the present day.”

In addition to her television roles, Langton was an accomplished stage actress. She won acclaim for playing Matron “Mama” Morton in the musical Chicago, Nell Dunn’s comedy Steaming, set in a Turkish bath house. She also starred in Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, Follies, Billy Elliot, and Mary Poppins.

Elaine Paige, who shared the stage with Langton in Hair, as well as in a music group called Sparrow, conveyed her shock and sorrow on Instagram. Paige, fondly recalling her friend from their days in the 1960s, said: “All the memories of our youth in the sixties musical Hair together come flooding back to me and I can see her now in the dressing room with her bottle of Newcastle Brown ale – which she loved!”

Paige continued, “We recorded an album together with some friends called Hatching Out under the group name Sparrow. She had a fantastic voice! She was unique, a talented artist with the best sense of humour. A kind and special woman who I am proud to have called my friend. I am thinking of her husband Derek at this difficult time and sending him my deepest condolences. RIP Dear Diane. I will miss you.”
