A team of Chinese scientists has made a promising leap in the fight against diabetes, demonstrating that stem cells can reactivate the natural production of insulin in chronic patients. This finding, published in the journal Cell Discoverycould transform the management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, reducing or eliminating reliance on daily injections.
Researchers from Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, the Center of Excellence in Cellular and Molecular Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Renji Hospital applied an innovative treatment that converts stem cells into insulin-producing cells. In an initial clinical trial, a 59-year-old patient with type 2 diabetes diagnosed 25 years ago stopped requiring external insulin for almost three years. His glucose levels normalized, marking a possible case of functional reversal.
“This is an encouraging step towards personalized therapies that stimulate endogenous regeneration.”

Preliminary results also suggest potential for type 1 diabetes, although the work remains in the experimental phase.
However, experts emphasize the need for larger clinical trials and independent reviews to confirm long-term safety and effectiveness. “It is not yet a universal cure, but it shines a light of real hope for millions of people affected,” agreed specialists consulted.
