Protect Your Home From Dengue Fever During Eid Travel

Dengue Threat Looms During Extended Eid Holiday

As families prepare for extended Eid holiday travel, health officials are urging homeowners to take precautions against dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). Wiht homes left vacant for longer periods, the risk of mosquito breeding increases considerably. The malang City Health Office (Dinkes) is providing crucial guidance to prevent homes from becoming breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes.

The “3M Plus” strategy: A Comprehensive Approach

Dr.Husnul Muarif, Head of Malang City Health Office (Kadinkes), emphasizes the importance of the “3M Plus” strategy. This enhanced approach builds upon the conventional 3M method to provide more robust protection against dengue.

Prevent DHF like being able to 3M and now there is an additional 3M plus.

Understanding the Core 3M Principles

The core of the strategy revolves around these key actions:

  1. Draining: Ensure all water reservoirs are completely emptied before leaving home. Eliminate any standing water sources.
  2. Closing: Securely cover all water storage containers and any areas prone to collecting water.
  3. Recycling: Dispose of or recycle any discarded items that could possibly hold water and become mosquito breeding sites.

Expanding Protection: The “Plus” in 3M plus

Beyond the core 3M principles, the “Plus” component incorporates additional preventative measures:

  • Protective Clothing: Wear long-sleeved clothing, especially in mosquito-prone areas.
  • Larvicide Application: Use larvicides in bathtubs and other water containers to kill mosquito larvae.
  • Mosquito Nets: Install mosquito nets over beds for added protection, notably during sleep.
  • Maintain Larvae Predators: Introduce natural predators of mosquito larvae, such as fish, into water containers.

Rising Dengue Cases: A Call to Action

The urgency of these preventative measures is underscored by a recent increase in dengue cases in Malang. As of early March 2025, the Malang City Health Office reported 202 cases, including two fatalities in Bandungrejosari and Tanjungrejo Village, Sukun District. This highlights the critical need for community-wide participation in dengue prevention efforts.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease that causes flu-like illness, and occasionally develops into a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue. The global incidence of dengue has grown dramatically in recent decades. About half of the world’s population is now at risk.

A Safe Homecoming: Prioritizing Health and Prevention

By implementing these simple yet effective strategies, residents can significantly reduce the risk of dengue and ensure a healthy and worry-free return home after the Eid holiday. Remember to prioritize PSN (Pemberantasan Sarang Nyamuk, or Mosquito Nest Eradication) to prevent mosquito breeding while your home is unattended.

Congratulations going home. Take care of your health. And don’t forget to do PSN to avoid the breeding of mosquitoes while the house is left homecoming.
