Development of a Neutral Atom-Based Quantum Processing Unit Aims to Provide Integrated Quantum Computing Solutions
Quantum computing startup OQT has announced a significant milestone in its journey. The company has secured a seed investment of 3 billion won from Kakao Ventures and Blue Point, marking a pivotal step in funding its ambitious research and development efforts.
The Quantum Processing Unit (QPU)
OQT is dedicated to the development of high-performance quantum processing units (QPUs), often referred to as the “brain” of quantum computing. These QPUs utilize qubits that can exist in both 0 and 1 states simultaneously, allowing for quantum parallelism and the execution of complex calculations at unprecedented speeds. OQT’s goal is to create an integrated solution for quantum computing by leveraging neutral atoms.
The Advantage of Neutral Atom QPUs
OQT is focusing on ensuring the operational scalability and reliability of neutral atom QPUs through its proprietary atomic control technology. The neutral atom QPU being developed by OQT employs laser-controlled neutral atoms as qubits, offering advantages over charged capture ion QPUs in terms of increasing the number of qubits. Additionally, unlike superconductors, which require cryogenic cooling, the neutral atom method is cooled using lasers at room temperature, significantly reducing maintenance costs.
Kim Dong-gyu: The Visionary CEO
At the helm of OQT is CEO Kim Dong-gyu, a distinguished expert in quantum technology. Holding a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Kim’s research focused on atomic and optical quantum technologies. He played a crucial role in the development of a 256 qubit neutral atom quantum computer during his tenure at QuEra, a pioneering quantum computing startup. Currently, Kim is a physics professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), where he engages actively in research and education in quantum computing.
Investor Statements
The support from Blue Point and Kakao Ventures underscores the confidence these venture-capital firms have in OQT’s potential to reshape the quantum computing landscape. “OQT represents a groundbreaking synergy of academic expertise and commercialization,” said Choi Soo-im, a senior judge at Blue Point. “We see OQT as a key driver in elevating the domestic quantum computing ecosystem to the next level and are excited to participate in its global growth journey.” Meanwhile, Kakao Ventures CEO Kim Ki-joon emphasized, “OQT’s work delves into the invisible world, and I believe everyone will experience the transformative impact it will bring. We are committed to supporting OQT’s innovative endeavors.”
Future Outlook
With the recent funding, OQT plans to enhance its research infrastructure and concentrate on nurturing core R&D capabilities. This strategic approach aims to advance the commercialization of quantum computers. Kim Dong-gyu envisions OQT evolving into a leader in the quantum computing industry, fostering innovation and reshaping the technological landscape.
