Development of a nuclear power plant for the lunar station of the Russian Federation and China has begun

2024-05-08 06:38:06

Roscosmos General Director Yuri Borisov said that Russia, together with China, is going to send a nuclear power plant to the lunar station in 2033–2035. Its development has already begun.

“It has begun,” Mr. Borisov said in a conversation with the RIA Novosti agency in response to a corresponding question.

On December 29, 2023, the Russian government approved the ratification of an agreement concluded in November 2022 with China on cooperation in the creation of an International Scientific Lunar Station. The key participants in the project will be Roscosmos and the Chinese National Space Administration.

Yuri Borisov spoke about plans to place a power plant on the Moon in March. According to him, it is planned to mount the installation on the lunar surface “at the turn of 2033–2035.” All the technological solutions necessary for this are already ready, he argued.

A Saturn moon hides a vast ocean beneath its surface

After a ten-year suspense following the discovery of an anomaly in its rotation, proof has finally been made that Mimas, the smallest of Saturn’s eight main moons, harbors an ocean of water beneath its entire surface. Even more astonishing, this ocean would be less than 25 million years old, almost nothing, compared to the 4.5 billion years of our solar system. This surprising discovery is the result of a long work, but also of an intuition going against the main ideas accepted until now on the evolution of the Saturn system.

It was in 2010 that our team began to question the real nature of Mimas. With a radius of 200 km, the smallest of Saturn’s so-called main moons is easily recognizable by its surface covered in craters. Discovered in 1789 by the British astronomer William Herschel, it would be necessary to wait for the space age to obtain the first resolved images of this moon, and thus be able to discover its inert surface.

Study Mimas to understand the shape of Saturn’s rings

The link between Mimas and our initial work was not immediate, since it involved explaining the most remarkable structure of Saturn’s rings: the Cassini division.

AMLO discussed with NASA a plan to have Internet throughout the country

Mexico City. An alternative to achieve internet communication throughout the national territory could be with satellites that could be put into orbit in collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The topic was part of the conversation that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had on April 23 with directors of that US organization.

It is part of the joint development strategy of North America, although “it takes time,” said the president. It would be having 60 thousand satellites to cover the entire national territory. “That matters a lot to us,” he said at the conference at the National Palace.

The issue gave rise to the president to insist that Mexico is interested in collaborating with the United States and Canada. Of the first, “we are already the main commercial partner.” The only thing is that respect for the sovereignties of the countries must be guaranteed because “economic integration is convenient for us.”

In fact, he said, the nearshoring It is a product of the political work that was done from Mexico. He immediately mentioned that during his campaign to become president of the United States, Donald Trump said that he did not want the North American trade agreement,

Voyager 1: The Incredible Journey to the Edge of the Solar System

Voyager⁣ 1 Reconnects with Mission Control

Voyager 1 has resumed⁤ communication ⁤with mission control after ⁣a five-month hiatus, marking‌ its return to exploring the outer reaches of the Solar System ‍alongside its counterpart, Voyager 2.

NASA’s Insights from the Voyager Mission

NASA’s Jim Green shares valuable insights gained from the Voyager spacecraft’s journey.

Voyager’s Journey into Interstellar Space

Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 and 2 have ventured into the depths of interstellar space, with Voyager 1 crossing into interstellar space in 2012.

Technical Glitch on Voyager 1

In November 2023, Voyager 1 experienced a technical glitch in its flight data subsystem (FDS), disrupting data transmissions back to Earth.

Repairing Voyager in Space

The team devised a solution to store the malfunctioning code elsewhere, enabling the resumption of data transmission from Voyager 1 in April 2024.

Challenges Ahead for Voyager

As the Voyagers age, power output diminishes, leading to strategic shutdowns of non-essential systems to prolong the spacecraft’s operational lifespan.

The Future of the Voyagers

By 2036, the Voyagers will venture beyond Earth’s receivers, continuing their silent journey into the Galaxy.

first image of atoms transforming into waves

2024-05-08 06:00:16

For the first time, physicists have managed to capture a clear picture showing individual atoms behaving like a wave. This discovery provides a striking demonstration of the principle of wave-particle duality, one of the foundations of quantum mechanics.

The researchers used a new image processing technique, which is still awaiting peer review, published on the preliminary arXiv server. They cooled lithium atoms to a temperature close to absolute zero by bombarding them with photons from a laser. This step aims to slow their movement. Then the atoms were confined in an optical lattice using additional lasers.

By alternating the activation and deactivation of this network, the atoms oscillated between a confined quasiparticle state and a wavelike state. This manipulation allowed scientists to observe the transformation of atoms and understand how they behave in waves over time.

According to Louis de Broglie and Erwin Schrödinger, the pioneers of this concept in 1924 and 1926 respectively, all quantum-sized objects, and therefore all matter on a very small scale, exist simultaneously in the form of particles and waves. This counterintuitive property of quantum mechanics has been observed in a number of experiments until now indirectly.

Ptychodus fossils reveal the prehistoric lord of the ocean.

Nearly complete fossil specimens of the Ptychodus shark recently found in Mexico have provided the international paleontological community with never-before-seen information about a giant carnivorous fish that was once king. existed in the oceans tens of millions of years ago.

VNA correspondent in Mexico cited the latest research by Dr. Romain Vullo of the University of Rennes, France, saying that after decades of searching, this is the first time scientists have found complete fossil samples of Ptychodus – a genus of shell-crushing sharks that lived during the late Cretaceous period 70 – 100 million years ago.

According to Dr. Vullo, 3 fossil samples recently found in the Vallecillo area of Nuevo Leon state, Northeastern Mexico preserve almost complete skeleton structure of Ptychodus, thereby revealing relatively detailed body shape. Body, anatomical information, behavior as well as position in the evolutionary family tree of this prehistoric creature.

Detailed analysis results show that this is a shark with a length of up to 10 meters, a body shape mixed with that of a megalodon – a giant shark with a length of 20 meters and a weight of up to 100 tons that went extinct 20 million years ago.
