by Archynetys Health Desk

TRENTO. Simone Deromedis is Olympic Ski Cross champion, Federico Tomasoni is silver: Italy scores a double and writes history in Livigno by experiencing another magical day in Milano Cortina 2026. For Fisi from Trentino this is the fourteenth Olympic medal in its history.

There had never been an Olympic podium in the specialty: in the heavy snowfall in Livigno, Deromedis dominated the scene in the final for the medals: the Trentino rider started better than everyone and no one was going to catch him, while behind him Tomasoni accomplished the featovertaking the Swiss Alex Fiva at the photo finish to certify a historic double.

Simone’s words

“Folly! It couldn’t have gone better than this, in the first few days I struggled to find my feet on the track and even this morning in qualifying it didn’t go my best. Then everything went as it was supposed to go: very fast materials, clarity, everything was really perfect. At the start of the season, two of us stood on the podium at the World Cup for the first time, now we’ve done it again at the Olympics too: I just get a hat!

A success that comes after an entire four-year period in which he has been a protagonist, since fifth place in Beijing 2022.

«Winning an Olympic medal is the greatest aspiration of every athlete, doing it in front of our audience was even more incredible. Fantastic, the best you can have: it’s difficult to even describe this moment. We were lucky enough to be able to compete and win in Italy, something that doesn’t happen in every athlete’s life, and the public and our friends gave us an extra boost. The desire to continue to grow this sport in Italy was an additional motivation, to introduce other young people to skicross, a discipline that can give adrenaline, which is popular.

We have also done our part in this sense: the entire Freestyle movement in Italy is growing a lot and this Olympic event is also demonstrating it. I didn’t set out with the expectation of winning, because in the first few days I struggled a bit riding on the track, even this morning in training which didn’t go very well. Then everything went well, we were also very quick with the equipment, so everything went as it should.

The weather changed everything, because the speed changed completely, with each lap you had to adapt, understand what to do, stay attentive and intelligent, and this is what made the difference. We had really fast skis and in these conditions they made the difference, together with our power.”

It all started with the Mickey Mouse Trophy

Simone Deromedis’ official competitive debut in ski cross dates back to 15 March 2016, when he took part in the freestyle Topolino Trophy at Passo Coe, placing fourth. Since that date, the sporting career of the talented skier from Taio, now the municipality of Predaia, has been a continuous improvement in technique and results. Bearer of the Anaune Ski Club and trained by various technicians including Massimo Menapace, the following year he was included in the newly formed team of the Trentino Committee (the only one in Italy), wanted by the then president Angelo Dalpez and coached by Dario Dellantonio from Predazza, former motocross champion.

In 2018 he was included in the national team, distinguishing himself in FIS races, then in the European Cup, winning his first race at Passo San Pellegrino in March 2021. His debut in the World Cup dates back to 8 December 2019 in Val Thorens and includes 7 victories (the last at the end of January in Val di Fassa) and 19 podiums, in addition to the world title won in Bakuriani on 26 February 2023. He had also participated in the Olympics of Beijing 2022, finishing fifth, and now February 21, 2026 the most important day of his career: gold at the Olympics.

Congratulations from Mellarini

The news was welcomed in Trentino with great enthusiasm by the entire world of winter sports and in particular by president of the provincial Federsci Tiziano Mellarini who immediately congratulated the new world champion through an instant web message, highlighting how the Trentino Federsci is always sensitive in the growth of young talents of all disciplines and Simone is one of the many who has made giant strides in recent seasons, reaching the pinnacle of the world and writing his name in the history of Italian and world championship skiing.

«I am over the moon – declared Mellarini – for this extraordinary affirmation of a crystalline talent. I like to highlight how the Committee has always invested in the ski cross discipline and personally I have never stopped believing in Simone’s potential.”
