New Orleans Saints’ Derek Carr’s Season Ends Preemptively

METAIRIE, La. – New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, marking the end of his season. This decision comes after Carr fractured his non-throwing hand during a game against the New York Giants on December 8.

Coach Rizzi’s Uphill Battle

Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi had been an advocate for Carr’s continued efforts to return, repeatedly maintaining the door open for the quarterback’s potential comeback. Rizzi watched Carr’s daily rehabilitation sessions with determination, which included the hopeful goal of rehabilitating enough to play the final two games of the season.

“I got frustrated with reports in the beginning because I witnessed and watched this guy every single day come in here and rehab with a purpose of getting back,” Rizzi said. “At no point in the rehab process was there ever a ‘I’m done for the year’ and it was literally ‘We’ll see how I feel tomorrow.’ He’s been progressing every day. I think it goes without saying … he really wanted to try to get back for the last two games being the Raiders honestly, and then this game, it just didn’t go as planned. Sometimes that happens and as I said, we never want to put [him] out there in a position where he felt like he couldn’t function at a high level, and that’s just not how we feel right now.”

Other Key Player Status

The Saints also announced the status of other key players. Alvin Kamara, who missed the past two games due to a groin injury, has been listed as doubtful. The team will conduct tests on Saturday to determine if Kamara is ready to play. Meanwhile, Chris Olave, who has not played since November 3 due to multiple concussions, has now been officially listed as questionable.

Backtracking on Carr’s Rehabilitation

Rizzi expressed frustration with the timeline for Carr’s rehabilitation. On Monday, he said Carr would need to successful complete at least one simulated game situation to play against the Buccaneers. An attempt was made last week against Carr’s former team, the Las Vegas Raiders, to bring him back on the field.

The Saints had injected Carr’s hand with pain medication, but he did not have full functionality, leading to the coach’s decision to rule Carr out for the remainder of the season. “We already tried once before. We did try to eject the hand and see if he could function. We’re just not there yet,” Rizzi noted.

Coach Rizzi acknowledged Carr’s dedication to returning. “I know that’s all been behind the scenes and that’s not seen by everybody every day, but it’s seen by me and our staff and our players and so I do want to commend him on the effort to try to get back out here on the field. He really did everything humanly possible to do that.”

The Future of Carr’s Comeback

The timing of another simulation had not been confirmed by Wednesday but remained a possibility before the Saints resumed practice. Rizzi provided insight into the strategic considerations behind the scenario trials. “If you see him out there with that red jersey running around then that means he did well Tuesday or Wednesday [prior to practice],” he said.

By Friday, Rizzi kept the intentions of future rehabilitation simulations private, citing the importance of medical guidance. “It’s because of where he is with his rehab,” stated Rizzi. “I’m following the lead of the medical side. It’s just where he is in the rehab. It’s better off waiting. In layman’s terms, it’s better if you get the hand as strong as possible before you do that to see if he’s going to be able to function.”

Conclusion and Impact

The decision to rule Carr out effectively ends his season prematurely, leaving the Saints with a leadership void at quarterback. The team’s performance in the final regular-season game against the Buccaneers will now rely on backups such as Taysom Hill or CJ Stroud, who have taken snaps in the absence of Carr.

Fans and analysts alike will be closely watching the Rams’ performance against the Buccaneers to gauge their end-of-season push. Whether or not Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave can contribute will also play a significant role in the Saints’ competitive standing.

As the Saints prepare for their final game of the regular season, the focus will shift to nurturing the talent across the roster to build a successful future. Carr’s contributions over the seasons remain etched in the team’s history, and his effort to return demonstrates his dedication to the game of football.
