Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley Compares Arrival of First Fleet to SpaceX Mission to Mars

Deputy opposition leader Sussan Ley has made waves with her depiction of the arrival of the First Fleet in Australia, drawing an unusual parallel to Elon Musk’s SpaceX mission to Mars. Ley made these comments during her Australia Day address in Albury, praising Australia as a beacon of peace, prosperity, and freedom.

Australia Day Address: Ley’s Remarks

Ley’s speech addressed the divisive nature of Australia Day, a day marked by both celebration and protest. She acknowledged the presence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander activists who will be marching in urban centers but emphasized pride in the nation’s history.

“Despite the black arm brigade, who will be marching in the streets of our cities today, the fact is the story of Australia is one that is objectively good,” Ley stated in her address.

She called on Australians to reject the messages of those she deems activists and to recognize the opportunities that came with the arrival of British settlers in 1788.

“The problem with those activists is they are so fixated with projecting themselves as survivors that they leave no room for us to come together as citizens,” Ley said.

Comparing the First Fleet to SpaceX

In her address, Ley drew a striking parallel between the arrival of the First Fleet and a futuristic mission to Mars led by SpaceX.

“All those years ago those ships did not arrive – as some would have you believe – as invaders. They did not come to destroy or to pillage,” Ley said.

“In what could be compared to Elon Musk’s SpaceX’s efforts to build a new colony on Mars, men in boats arrived on the edge of the known world to embark on that new experiment. A new experiment and a new society.”

“And just like astronauts arriving on Mars those first settlers would be confronted with a different and strange world, full of danger, adventure and potential. From that moment our national story stood at a crossroads.”

Peter Dutton’s Frontbench Reshuffle

A day prior to Ley’s remarks, opposition leader Peter Dutton reshuffled his frontbench, introducing a new role: Shadow Minister for Government Efficiency. This role mirrors the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) concept, which has gained prominence in discussions with Elon Musk.

Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, a prominent Indigenous politician, was named to this new role, adding an intriguing element to the Coalition’s strategy.

Elon Musk and Political Alliances

There is speculation that Coalition members are aiming to capture Elon Musk’s attention, who has a significant social media following of over 214 million on X and has consistently commented on political events worldwide.

Several Coalition MPs have suggested that Dutton should emulate Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s policy positions, particularly in areas like government efficiency and climate policy.
