The Department of Education (DepEd) under the Marcos administration has unveiled plans to localize its Adopt-A-School Program. This initiative aims to better address regional needs and improve the delivery of basic education infrastructure, digitalization, and accessibility.
DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara expressed gratitude to the agency’s partners for their support over the past six months. “You have been very helpful in the six months we’ve been in DepEd,” Angara stated. “Let’s continue this partnership and work together to make everything faster,” he added.
The meeting on the program was attended by representatives from a wide range of organizations, including the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities, Stratbase, RealPage, the League of Corporate Foundations, Philippine Business for Social Progress, the Management Association of the Philippines, the IT Business Process Association of the Philippines, the Ayala Foundation, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines, and the Association of Foundations, along with Philippine Business for Education.
Addressing Shortsights
One of the key initiatives under the Adopt-A-School program is a public-private partnership (PPP) that aims to construct 15,000 classrooms by June 2027. This first phase of the classroom construction project will ensure that learning spaces meet modern standards, provide comfort, and are resilient against natural disasters.
The digitalization program, known as PSIP Connect, also received attention. Digital hardware procurement is set to begin in May 2025, with delivery expected around the same time in 2026. Partners from the private sector committed to ensuring that the digital tools provided meet global standards, benefiting both teachers and students.
Beyond addressing classroom and digitalization gaps, partners highlighted the critical need to tackle malnutrition. Addressing malnutrition is seen as a vital component in ensuring a holistic approach to educational challenges.
Progress and Partnerships
The DepEd’s efforts to localize the Adopt-A-School Program reflect a commitment to regional engagement and local solutions. By involving a diverse range of partners, the Department aims to mobilize resources where they are most needed, enhancing the educational experience for students across the country.
The planned classroom construction and digitalization initiatives represent significant investments in the future of education. These efforts not only aim to improve the physical infrastructure of schools but also to equip them with the necessary technology to prepare students for the digital age.
The emphasis on malnutrition underscores the interconnectivity of various educational challenges. By addressing this issue alongside physical and technological improvements, the DepEd demonstrates a comprehensive approach to enhancing educational outcomes.
Looking Forward
The localized Adopt-A-School Program is a promising development in the Department of Education’s ongoing mission to improve basic education infrastructure, digitalization, and accessibility. With the support of various organizations, DepEd is set to make a substantial impact on regional educational needs.
As the timeline for classroom construction and digital hardware procurement unfolds, the DepEd will continue to work closely with its partners to ensure that schools are equipped to meet the needs of students in the 21st century.
The commitment to addressing malnutrition further reinforces the multifaceted approach to improving education. By tackling these challenges, DepEd is laying the groundwork for a more robust and inclusive educational system.
We look forward to the continued progress and achievements of the Adopt-A-School Program. The collaboration between DepEd and its partners is essential in ensuring that every student in the Philippines has access to quality education.
