Dementia Care Standard: New Guidance for Professionals

V&VN signed a signature on Thursday, January 29, in support of a new Dementia Care Standard on which an agreement in principle has been reached. V&VN director Cora Vegter: “The previous Dementia Care Standard mainly described what care should be organised. The new care standard describes more emphatically how professional responsibility, continuity and direction should be organised. From the unhealthy phase to the later phases of dementia.”

V&VN signed it during the ‘Thuis bij’ conference, where many other healthcare parties were also present. Gerben Janssen and Monique Dekker, chairman and vice-chairman of the V&VN Dementia Case Managers department, say that V&VN has actively and substantively contributed to updating the Dementia Care Standard. “From a nursing and caring perspective, explicit attention has been paid to expertise, role purity and feasibility. V&VN has also committed itself to a clear positioning of the dementia case manager.”

Don’t negotiate again and again

Janssen believes that the new care standard is better suited to daily practice and the complexity of dementia care and well-being. “It is now clearer what good dementia care requires from professionals, organizations and networks. It is becoming clearer to healthcare professionals who bears which professional responsibility in the dementia process.”

The Dementia Care Standard 2026 provides more guidance for collaboration and prevents professionals from having to repeatedly negotiate roles, tasks and expertise, says Janssen. “For a dementia case manager, this means, for example, that the role as an expert, independent director of the process is more explicitly stated, including early identification, coordination and coordination of care and support across domains. This helps to practice the profession at the right level.”
