Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Reveals Year-Round Strategy to Fight Pollution

New Delhi: Fresh from her swearing-in ceremony, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta laid out a comprehensive 365-day plan to tackle the ongoing issues of air, water, and vehicular pollution in the national capital. Speaking exclusively to The Times of India less than 30 hours after assuming office, Gupta emphasized the critical need for a year-round approach to pollution control.

Year-Round Approach to Pollution

Gupta echoed the concerns of environmentalists and citizens regarding the prevalent reliance on seasonal measures to address pollution. “We recognize that the efforts in curbing pollution must span the entire year,” she stated. “Our government will work on dust, parali (stubble), vehicular, and water pollution consistently throughout the year, rather than adopting a band-aid approach during specific seasons.”

This year-round strategy aligns with a broader vision to clean the Yamuna by a set timeline, indicating a more sustainable approach to improving the city’s environmental health.

Addressing Water Crisis

Gupta also addressed the looming water shortages, anticipated to escalate with rising demand during summer. The Chief Minister expressed intent to develop a long-term strategy to augment water supplies by securing resources from neighboring states. “We will make requests to Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Punjab for additional water,” she mentioned. Gupta, being a daughter of Haryana, showed optimism about securing cooperation from her home state and other BJP-ruled areas.

Mahila Samriddhi Yojana

In terms of welfare schemes, Gupta shed light on the BJP‘s Manifesto promise of providing Rs 2,500 to women under the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana. She emphasized the principle that such welfare programs should primarily benefit the most vulnerable segments of society.

Concerns Over State Treasury

The newly appointed CM also expressed concerns about the financial position of the Delhi government. Initially, she proposed targeting additional sources of revenue and minimizing waste to ensure adequate funding for welfare initiatives.

Investigation into Previous Governance

In a move expected to garner attention, Gupta indicated the formation of an SIT (Special Investigation Team) to investigate alleged corruption during the previous administrations under Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi Sharma. The Chief Minister clarified that the investigation would be targeted at uncovering “corruption sagas,” rather than mounting a political witch-hunt.

Conclusion

Rekha Gupta’s agenda showcases a proactive stance on environmental sustainability and fiscal responsibility, coupled with a commitment to equity in welfare distribution. As Delhi begins a new chapter under her leadership, the success of these initiatives will be closely watched by citizens and stakeholders alike.
