DeepSeek Challenges Nvidia, Revitalizes AI Chip Market with Open-Source Model

DeepSeek has sent waves through the U.S.-dominated AI industry with its newest model, significantly impacting chip leader Nvidia’s market cap. As sector giants like Nvidia navigate this shift, smaller AI startups are recognizing a lucrative opportunity.

“Developers are looking to replace expensive, proprietary models like OpenAI’s with open-source alternatives such as DeepSeek R1,” said Andrew Feldman, CEO of AI chip pioneer Cerebras Systems. The company, which competes with Nvidia’s graphic processing units (GPUs) and provides cloud-based services via custom computing clusters, has seen a substantial surge in demand due to DeepSeek’s R1 release.

“DeepSeek R1 demonstrates that the AI market growth will not be monopolized by a single entity—not even with traditional hardware and software barriers,” Feldman asserted.

Open-source software, whose code is freely accessible for modification and redistribution, sets DeepSeek’s models apart from those of competitors like OpenAI. Despite using less advanced GPUs and running at lower costs, DeepSeek maintains that its R1 reasoning model matches or surpasses leading American AI offerings.

“Just as lower prices facilitated the global adoption of PCs and the internet, AI is set to follow a similar trajectory,” Feldman observed.

Inference Chips

DeepSeek’s innovations could accelerate the shift from AI training to the inference phase, potentially increasing the market for new chip technologies. Inference involves applying AI models to real-world data to make predictions or decisions, whereas training entails building and refining these models.

“In training, we architect the tool, while inference is deploying that tool in actual applications,” explained Phelix Lee, an equity analyst at Morningstar focused on semiconductors.

While Nvidia dominates GPU use for AI training, there’s growing demand for inference chips that offer greater efficiency at lower costs. Since deep learning models are computationally intensive, inference tasks can be executed with less powerful chips dedicated to narrower functionalities.

Several AI chip startups, including d-Matrix and Etched, have reported increased interest from clients eager to apply DeepSeek’s open-source model. “This demonstrates that smaller, cost-effective models can outperform larger, proprietary ones,” said Sid Sheth, CEO of d-Matrix.

“DeepSeek’s R1 has sparked interest in inference technologies, driving more companies to invest in this area,” added Etched’s co-founder and COO, Robert Wachen.
