Is Deebo Samuel Suffering a Slump or a System Issue?
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel has been a fan favorite and a dynamic offensive threat since entering the league. Known for his versatility and explosive playmaking ability, Samuel earned All-Pro honors in 2021. However, this season, he’s facing increased scrutiny over his seemingly reduced impact.
Diminished Production Raises Questions
Recent performances, including a lackluster showing against the Chicago Bears, have fueled concerns about Samuel’s effectiveness. While the 49ers offense has been firing on all cylinders, Samuel’s touches haven’t translated into the same level of success we’ve come to expect. His stats paint a picture: 40 catches for 553 yards and one touchdown, alongside 92 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.
These numbers are a significant dip from his previous seasons, leading Samuel to publicly express his frustration on social media.
"Not struggling at all just not getting the ball!!!!!!! 🤷🏾♂️" – Deebo Samuel (@19problemz)
While Samuel’s Twitter post suggests a perceived lack of opportunities, the data reveals a deeper issue: a decline in his productivity even when he does get the ball.
A Closer Look at the Numbers
Samuel’s touch average has decreased this season, but his effectiveness has also taken a hit. His yards per touch, a crucial indicator of his explosiveness, has fallen from a career average of 11.6 to a concerning 9.0. This drop is evident in both his receiving and rushing performances.
Experts at Pro Football Focus (PFF) have also noticed a decline in Samuel’s after-catch explosiveness and his efficiency per route run. Addressing the issue head-on, PFF highlights Samuel’s career-low yards after catch per reception (7.5) and yards per route run (1.73).
Furthermore, Samuel’s ability to break tackles has decreased significantly. This suggests that, even when he has the ball in his hands, he’s not generating the yards after contact he once did.
System, Mindset, or a Combination?
The reasons behind Samuel’s decline are multifaceted and likely a combination of factors. The 49ers’ offensive scheme may not be maximizing his unique skillset as effectively as it has in the past. However, his diminished effectiveness when he does get the ball suggests a potential decline in his physical performance or engagement.
Whatever the cause, Samuel’s struggles raise vital questions for the 49ers. Can they unlock his potential again? Or will this season mark a turning point in his career?
