A Near-Death Experience: The Pope’s Battle with Pneumonia
In late February, Pope Francis, the 88-year-old leader of the Catholic Church, faced a severe health crisis that brought him to the brink of death. Admitted to the hospital for double pneumonia, his condition rapidly deteriorated, leading his medical team to contemplate halting intensive treatment. This revelation comes from Dr. Sergio Alfieri, a member of the Pope’s medical team, in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
The Critical night of February 28th
According to Dr. Alfieri, February 28th was a particularly dire night. The Pope experienced acute breathing difficulties, and the medical team feared he wouldn’t survive until morning. That night was terrible. He knew, just like us, that he might not get the morning,
Alfieri stated, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
A Arduous Decision: To Treat or Not to Treat?
Faced with the Pope’s deteriorating condition, the medical team had to make a difficult choice: continue aggressive treatment with the risk of damaging other organs,or cease intervention.
We had to choose whether we would stop and let him go, or if we would try all possible medicines and therapies, where we ran a great risk of damaging other organs.
Ultimately, the decision was placed in the Pope’s hands.
the Pope’s Resolute Determination
Despite the risks, Pope Francis chose to fight. Try everything, don’t give up,
he reportedly told his doctors. This determination resonated with the entire medical team, who rallied to provide the best possible care.
Try everything, don’t give up,said Francis. We all thought so. And nobody gave up.
In the days that followed, the Pope’s medical team faced further challenges, including the risk of kidney and bone marrow damage. Three days after the initial crisis, Pope Francis experienced another episode of acute breathing problems. Doctors employed a camera hose with a specialized device to clear mucus, ultimately leading to a decrease in the lung infection.
Throughout his ordeal, Pope Francis remained conscious and engaged, requesting honest updates about his condition. From day one he asked us to tell him the truth about his condition,
Alfieri noted.
Looking Ahead: Rest and Reduced Exposure
Following his 38-day hospital stay, Pope Francis was discharged on Sunday. Though, doctors have advised him to limit his exposure to large gatherings to minimize the risk of new infections. This medical advice has led to the postponement of a planned state visit from British King Charles and Queen Camilla, originally scheduled for April 8th. The visit will be rescheduled once the Pope has sufficiently recovered.
Pope Francis’s recent health scare underscores the challenges he faces as he continues to lead the Catholic Church at an advanced age. His resilience and the dedication of his medical team have been instrumental in his recovery.
