Democrats Prepare for Special Election to Fill Connolly’s Congressional Seat
“The dark blue tendency in the constituency means that Democrats have a great chance to keep the seat.”
Following the death of longtime Rep. Gerry Connolly, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin is expected to schedule a special election to fill the vacant 11th Congressional District seat, a democratic stronghold in Fairfax County.Connolly passed away at the age of 75, weeks after announcing his retirement due to a recurrence of cancer.
Virginia law requires Yangkin to announce a special election, though it doesn’t specify a timeline. legal restrictions suggest the earliest possible date is June 24, after the state’s June 17 primary election. Democrats are preparing for a swift election, potentially using a “fire station primary” approach in July. Several candidates have expressed interest in the seat.
Democratic candidates include Braddock City Supervisor James Wokingshaw, who had Connolly’s support; State Senator Stella Pekaski; Fairfax Planning Commissioner Candice Bennett; and attorney Amy Roma. On the Republican side, Mike Van Mitt, the 2022 candidate, will run again.
Stephen Farnsworth of Mary washington University suggests that delaying the election could give Republicans a slight advantage in the House of Representatives,as the Democratic seat would remain vacant.Though, the district’s strong Democratic leanings suggest Democrats are likely to retain the seat.
Connolly began his political career with the Fairfax County Supervisory board before being elected to Congress in 2008.
