While we in Germany and the rest of the EU still have a little more than a week before daylight saving time robs us of an hour of sleep, one country has to do it this weekend. In Morocco the clocks will change on the night of Saturday, March 21st to Sunday, March 22nd, 2026. Although summer time actually applies all year round in Morocco, due to the fasting month of Ramadan, the clocks were temporarily set back one hour to make it easier to break the fast in the evening. After the end of the fasting month, the country is now returning to daylight saving time.
Morocco is no exception. Summer time has already begun in many other countries. Above all, the USA and Canada: There the clocks were set forward on the second Sunday in March – significantly earlier than in Europe. It is also summer time in many parts of Mexico.
What that means for us
Anyone traveling to the USA or Canada these days or who regularly works with colleagues there will benefit from this in the short term: the time difference to New York will temporarily shrink to 5 hours instead of 6 hours, while it will be 8 hours instead of 9 hours to Los Angeles. It will stay that way until Europe follows suit at the end of March.

In the EU, summer time has been discussed politically for a long time and was actually intended to be abolished, but nothing has happened so far. Therefore, the following still applies: On the night of March 28th to 29th, 2026, the clocks in this country will also be set forward at 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. So sleep is an hour shorter, but there is more evening light.
