Day for the prevention of abusive consumption of anxiolytic and sedative medications

The General Directorate of Public Health and the General Directorate of Mental Health, organize on December 14 a Conference for the prevention of the abusive consumption of anxiolytic and hypnosedative medications.
In recent years, an increasing trend has been observed in the prevalence of consumption of sedative-hypnotics with or without a prescription, which in 2021 has reached the highest values since this indicator has been monitored. This trend is especially worrying in the young population and women. This event is proposed as a meeting point between health, education and addiction prevention professionals to promote awareness of the overmedicalization of many vital situations and make visible alternatives for addressing it.

Study highlights high risks of antipsychotics used in dementia

Several antipsychotic treatments are associated with serious side effects when they are used to calm symptoms of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease, points out a study published Thursday, fueling the already numerous controversies surrounding these drugs.
“The use of antipsychotics (…) in adults with dementia is associated with increased risks of stroke, venous thromboembolism, myocardial infarction, heart failure, fracture, pneumonia and acute renal failure,” lists this study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ).
These treatments — risperidone, haloperidol, quetiapine and olanzapine — are normally used for psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. They are also sometimes used against depression that is particularly resistant to other medications.
But it also happens that they are prescribed to patients suffering from dementia, such as Alzheimer’s. It is not a question of curing these illnesses, most of the time incurable, but of calming certain symptoms such as aggressive behavior.
This use is, however, very controversial, due to the serious side effects that these treatments pose, and their limited effectiveness in this indication.
In France, as in the United Kingdom, where the BMJ study was carried out, only risperidone and haloperidol are authorized for dementia.

Navarra Medical Union Demands Salary Increase and Calls for Strike
The Medical Union of Navarra (SMN) has voiced their agreement with the diagnosis made by the Health Department of the Foral Community regarding the major issues within the Navarrese Health System. According to the SMN, the two main problems are the long waiting lists and the lack of accessibility to the health system. In addition to these challenges, the doctors in the autonomous community are demanding the salary increase that was previously agreed upon with the Navarrese Executive over a year ago.
The agreement, reached in February of last year, included improvements for healthcare workers such as the elimination of overload, exclusiveness, and improvements in labor conditions. Specifically, the agreed-upon salary increase was to be stipulated through the creation of a Fixed Practitioner Productivity Complement, with estimates suggesting an increase of around a thousand euros per month.
Despite the completion of a study commissioned by the Public University of Navarra confirming the salary disparity between doctors in Navarra and those in neighboring communities, the Minister of Health, Fernando Dominguez, criticized the medical community for demanding further increases under the threat of strikes. He highlighted the previous salary increase of 400 euros a month without any commitments to fulfill.
