David Letterman Surprises Jimmy Fallon on ‘The Tonight Show’
Late-night television legend David Letterman surprised NBC’s The Tonight Show host, Jimmy Fallon, during his opening monologue on Monday night. This cameo was a significant moment, marking Letterman’s first appearance on the show since 1992.
A Long-Awaited Reunion
In 1992, when Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show, Letterman made his final episode. Since then, Letterman had appeared dozens of times on the show when Carson was in charge. However, he had never returned to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Paul Shaffer and the World’s Most Dangerous Band
During the surprise appearance, Paul Shaffer and the World’s Most Dangerous Band, Letterman’s longtime sidekick and band, took to the stage. They were subbing for The Tonight Show’s house band, The Roots, who were preparing for SNL’s 50th anniversary concert.
Midway through a bit, the band SWITCHED to Letterman’s old theme song, and Letterman emerged from behind the curtain, looking puzzled and amused.
“Jimmy!” he exclaimed in mock shock. “Paul? What are you doing here?”
Shaffer jokingly responded, “You know, it’s a funny story. Have you ever taken too much Ambien and then you wake up somewhere with no clue how the hell you got there?”
Letterman laughed heartily, “Wow, you’ve been reading my diary,” he replied, adding to the humorous banter that ensued.
A Short but Memorable Appearance
The former king of late-night television spent about five minutes on the set, engaging in playful exchanges with Fallon. Despite his brief stint, the moment was filled with nostalgic value for many viewers.
