A Handball Star’s Heartbreak: Gulldén’s Journey Through Grief
swedish handball icon Isabelle Gulldén has recently shared her deeply personal experience of loss following the death of her sister, Rebecca, in December after a battle with cervical cancer. Gulldén spoke candidly about her grief and the profound impact Rebecca’s illness had on her life and career.

Prioritizing Family: A Arduous Decision
Approximately three years prior to her passing,Rebecca received a diagnosis of cervical cancer. This prompted Isabelle to make a significant life change: she chose to terminate her contract with Vipers Kristiansand, a Norwegian handball club, and return to Sweden to be closer to her sister. She joined Lugi, a Swedish team, allowing her to provide support and spend precious time with Rebecca.
A Glimmer of Hope, Followed by Renewed Darkness
Gulldén recounted a moment of hope when, in March, Rebecca was able to attend Isabelle’s final Champions League match. we got to celebrate and she was afterwards
, Gulldén recalled, highlighting the joy of sharing that moment with her sister. In August, the family received the encouraging news that the cancer was in remission, allowing them a period of relative normalcy. Though, this respite was short-lived, as the cancer soon returned.

Gulldén described the period following the cancer’s return as a descent into a deep hole.
Despite the immense emotional toll, Rebecca remained strong, expressing her desire to live as normally as possible. Gulldén emphasized the difficulty of coping with her sister’s illness, stating, It’s my little sister. You want to take care of her.
She prioritized spending time with Rebecca, maintaining daily contact and visits.
It has been an extremely heavy period. But I am very happy that I could spend so much time with her.
