D’angelo has announced his withdrawal from the 2025 Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, citing ongoing medical complications stemming from a recent surgery. the annual music festival is set to take place from may 31 to June 1 at The Mann in Fairmount Park.

The R&B singer shared the news on Friday (May 23) via social media, explaining that he would be unable to headline the event due to medical advice regarding his recovery. “it is with the deepest of regrets that [I] must cancel my performance at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia next weekend,” D’Angelo wrote in a statement posted on the Roots Picnic’s Instagram page.”But, due to an unforeseen medical delay regarding surgery [I] had earlier this year, [I’ve] been advised by my team of specialists that the performance this weekend could further complicate matters.”

Festival organizers expressed their support for the artist in the post’s caption: “Due to a longer-than-expected surgical recovery, @thedangelo won’t be able to join us at Roots picnic this year. We’re sending love and keeping him in our thoughts as he continues to heal!”

Roots Picnic Lineup Changes

Despite D’Angelo’s absence, the 17th annual Roots Picnic will proceed as planned with headliners Meek mill and Lenny Kravitz. The lineup also features performances by GloRilla, Miguel, Tems, Latto, Kaytranada, and Jeezy.

D’Angelo was originally scheduled to perform alongside The Roots, who curate the festival each year. Maxwell, another prominent figure in neo-soul, will step in as his replacement, according to a festival proclamation made Friday on Instagram.

“and even more disappointed to not see all of You,” D’Angelo added in his statement.

The singer concluded his message by thanking his fans for their ongoing support and hinted at upcoming new music: “[I’m] currently in the Lab & can’t wait to serve up what’s in the Pot!” he wrote. “LOVE U All and will see you very soon!”

D’Angelo’s previous appearance at the Roots Picnic was in 2016, during the festival’s inaugural New York City event.That performance followed the release of his critically acclaimed album, Black Messiah, which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart in January 2015.
