At the heart of the story is Mikeš, portrayed by Pavel Kříž, an actor perhaps better known for his role in the “Poets” series. Despite initial reservations from some viewers who felt Kříž didn’t quite fit the image of a muscular blacksmith, his portrayal of Mikeš resonated with audiences. Mikeš embodies courage, selflessness, and unwavering determination – the very essence of knightly virtues. He leaves his father’s smithy, driven by a thirst for adventure and a heart of gold.

Pavel Kříž did not mind. I think it is one of his best acting creations without irony or exaggeration.

Key locations included the Museum of Strážnice, which served as Mikeš’s home and other settings, and a windmill near kuželov, which became Matěj’s mill. The haunting ruins of Rosa Coeli in Dolní Kounice provided the perfect backdrop for the Black King’s ominous underground kingdom.

The film’s production design effectively uses these locations to create a believable and immersive fairy-tale world. Mikeš’s timely return to the castle exposes the treachery of his former allies, disrupting their coronation. The king, finally recognizing the true hero, offers Mikeš the throne as a reward for his bravery and integrity. Despite marrying and being offered the highest position in the land, Mikeš finds that royal life does not suit him. He ultimately chooses the familiar comfort and honest labor of his forge, a testament to his humble nature and unwavering dedication to his craft.
