From the Octagon to the Ring: Cyborg’s Boxing Ambition
Cris Cyborg, the renowned 39-year-old mixed martial artist, is diligently honing her boxing skills, fueled by the ambition to contend for a world title in the 154-pound division. Despite acknowledging that her boxing technique is still a work in progress, a recent intensive training camp with José Benavidez Sr.has substantially boosted her confidence.
cyborg’s transition to boxing reflects a growing trend of MMA fighters crossing over to the sweet science. This crossover appeal is driven by the lucrative opportunities and the challenge of mastering a different combat discipline. Such as, Conor McGregor’s foray into boxing against Floyd Mayweather
in 2017 highlighted the potential financial rewards, even in defeat.
Potential Showdown with Braekhus Looms
Discussions have already commenced between cyborg’s team and representatives of former undisputed Welterweight Champion Cecilia Braekhus regarding a potential title challenge for the WBC Super Welterweight belt. This possibility hinges on Cyborg maintaining her undefeated record in her upcoming fight this Saturday night.
Braekhus, a 43-year-old boxing veteran from norway, is nearing the end of her career but remains a formidable force in the division. Currently ranked number 2 among super welterweight contenders by The Ring, a fight against her woudl be a meaningful test for Cyborg. As of 2024, the women’s boxing scene has seen a surge in popularity, with viewership and participation rates increasing by 20% according to recent sports analytics reports.
Facing Priceus Harris-McCray: The Next Hurdle
Before any potential title shot, Cyborg (4-0, 3 KOs), based in Las Vegas, is scheduled to face Priceus Harris-McCray (4-1, 3 KOs) in a six-round main event at Tech CU Arena in San Jose, California. Harris-McCray, hailing from Brooklyn, is looking to bounce back from a recent unanimous decision loss to Elia Carranza.
Intensive Training and Dedication
Cyborg’s commitment to boxing is evident in her rigorous training regimen. Following two knockout victories in Colombia earlier this year, she dedicated over a month to training at the Benavidez Gym, under the guidance of José Benavidez Sr., who also trains his sons, WBC champion David Benavidez and José Jr.
I trust the process. I know it is a different sport, so I started from below again in boxing. But I am very happy. It has been a hard training.I left a cozy place to make a real boxing camp. It has been a great camp with josé and the whole team. This will be my fifth fight. I want to improve my boxing, keep learning and perhaps having the opportunity to fight for a title before finishing my career.
cyborg’s dedication underscores the challenges of transitioning between combat sports. While her MMA background provides a foundation of athleticism and fighting experience, boxing requires a distinct skillset and strategic approach.
Looking Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities
Cyborg remains focused on her immediate opponent while acknowledging the potential opportunities that lie ahead.
I think there will be opportunities for me. But I love the challenges. I think this next opponent is a great challenge for me. I have worked very hard to achieve victory and offer a great fight.
Her journey in boxing is a testament to her adaptability and unwavering pursuit of excellence. Weather she secures a title shot or not, Cyborg’s foray into boxing adds another chapter to her already illustrious combat sports career.
