Cuban Peasantry Honored Amidst Focus on Food Sovereignty

Recognition for Contributions to Cuban Agriculture
In a ceremony attended by prominent Cuban leaders,including Prime Minister manuel Marrero,Communist Party Secretary Roberto morales,and Rebel Army Commander José Ramón Machado,over fifty members of the Cuban peasantry where recognized for their contributions to the nation’s agricultural sector. The event highlighted the critical role of Cuban farmers in achieving food sovereignty, a pressing issue for the Caribbean nation.

The honors bestowed upon the farmers included prestigious awards,underscoring the government’s commitment to acknowledging and supporting the agricultural workforce. Two affiliates of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) received the honorary title of “Work of the Republic of Cuba,” a testament to their extraordinary dedication and productivity.
Further accolades included the Order of May 17, awarded to six individuals; the Romárico Cordero Medal, presented to fifteen; and the Antero-Gifted Distinction, conferred upon thirty-one. Additionally, the josé Ramírez Cruz special seal was awarded to employees of the ANAP National Directorate, recognizing their administrative support to the agricultural sector.
ANAP Congress to Address Food Production Challenges
The awards ceremony precedes the XIII Congress of ANAP, scheduled to take place this Friday. The congress will primarily focus on addressing the challenges related to increasing food production, improving agricultural yields, and meeting the growing demands of the Cuban population. Food security remains a notable concern globally, wiht many nations striving to enhance their domestic agricultural capabilities. According to the Food and Agriculture Association of the United Nations
(FAO), achieving food security requires improving productivity, ensuring sustainable use of natural resources, and promoting equitable access to food.
The congress, held at the Palace of Conventions in Havana, will host approximately 400 delegates and 100 guests, providing a platform for discussion and strategic planning.
Strategies for Food Sovereignty
Félix duarte, president of ANAP, emphasized the importance of the upcoming congress as a forum for analyzing challenges, sharing best practices, and formulating strategies to achieve food sovereignty. He stated:
This Congress will be space to analyze concrete difficulties,socialize best practices and draw strategies towards food sovereignty.

Duarte also highlighted the crucial role of Cuban farmers in overcoming the nation’s food challenges during his appearance on the Teson Redonda television program, asserting that their wisdom and delivery
are essential to finding solutions.

This approach is particularly relevant in the face of climate change and geopolitical instability,which can disrupt global supply chains and impact food availability.
