Just a few days before launch, Crimson Desert found itself at the center of a new controversy among PC players. Pearl Abyss quietly added DRM Denuvo to the Steam version of the game, a decision that quickly sparked criticism on social media and the platform’s forums.
Denuvo is known for trying to prevent piracy and changes to game files, but it also carries a controversial reputation among PC gamers. In several cases, the technology was accused of causing performance drops or microcrashes.
The change appeared on the game’s Steam page on March 12, just a week before its debut. Data from public database SteamDB indicates that the Denuvo system was added 5 hours ago (at the time of publishing). The update took many players by surprise, mainly because the feature had not been previously mentioned.
The community’s reaction was immediate. In a discussion on the Steam forum, a thread titled “DENUVO = pre-order canceled instantly” gathered dozens of comments from users criticizing the decision. Some claim that the technology could harm game performance and drive away potential buyers.
The concern arose even after positive technical analyzes of the project. The Digital Foundry channel had recently published a detailed analysis of the BlackSpace Engine, a graphics engine created specifically for Crimson Desert. In the video, experts praised the 4K performance, ray tracing efficiency and advanced water effects.
Crimson Desert is scheduled for release on March 19th on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X.
