By analyzing data from more than 18,000 births occurring between 2020 and 2021, American researchers observed that 16.3% of children exposed to the virus during pregnancy were diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disorder before their third birthday, compared to only 9.7% of those not exposed. The excess risk was higher in boys, and it was particularly marked when the infection occurred in the third trimester of pregnancy.
