State of Mexico Shows Low COVID-19 Hospitalization Rates Amidst Respiratory Virus Season

COVID-19 Hospitalizations Remain Low

Recent data indicates a remarkably low occupancy rate for COVID-19 beds in hospitals across the State of Mexico. According to the Severe Acute Respiratory Infections Network (IRAG), only 2.4% of designated beds are currently occupied by COVID-19 patients. This suggests a important decrease in severe cases requiring hospitalization.

Specifically, the General Salvador González Herrejón Hospital in Atizapán de Zaragoza reports a 6% occupancy rate, while other regions, including the North, South, and Toluca Valley, currently report no COVID-19 patients in hospitals. This localized concentration suggests potential regional variations in transmission or vulnerability.

Overview of Respiratory Virus Cases in the State of Mexico

The Undersecretariat of Federal Health Prevention and Promotion’s weekly report, dated March 25, 2025 (Epidemiological Week 12), reveals a total of 3,531 cases of influenza and severe acute respiratory infections in the State of Mexico. Within this period, 14 new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the year-to-date total to 73. While any increase is a concern, these numbers remain relatively low compared to earlier phases of the pandemic.

Despite being the most populous state in Mexico, the State of Mexico ranks fifth in the number of respiratory virus cases, accounting for 8.2% of the national total. Mexico City (20.8%), Zacatecas (13.9%), Querétaro (11.4%), and Aguascalientes (9.9%) currently have higher case numbers.

Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses

During week 23 of the 2024-2025 seasonal influenza season, health units monitoring viral respiratory diseases (USmer) reported 642 positive influenza cases out of 6,931 suspected cases. The week saw 23 new cases and, sadly, 7 deaths attributed to influenza. These figures highlight the ongoing threat of seasonal influenza, even amidst the focus on COVID-19.

Nationally, during the 2024-2025 season (up to week 12 of 2025), 6,338 positive cases of other respiratory viruses (OVR) have been confirmed, primarily in Mexico City, State of Mexico, Nuevo León, Aguascalientes, and Jalisco. The State of Mexico has recorded approximately 10,200 positive cases of other respiratory viruses, with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and Enterovirus/Rhinovirus being the most prevalent.

Vaccination Campaign Concludes

The influenza and COVID-19 vaccination campaign concluded on March 28th. Public health officials urge residents to remain vigilant and practise preventative measures, such as frequent handwashing and staying home when sick, to minimize the spread of respiratory illnesses.
