TORTIYA – 2025/05/29 09:50:51 – Zonsreu Elvis, the head of the farming, fishing, and aquaculture post in Tortiya, Hambol region, has stressed the critical need for pet owners to vaccinate their animals against rabies.
Mr. Zonsreu made this appeal during an facts and awareness meeting held on Monday, May 26, 2025, with the municipality and various social groups.
He stated, “The anti-rabic vaccine is the surest way to protect yourself from this fatal disease. This is why, we invite pet owners such as dogs, cats and others (closest to humans) to have their animals vaccinated.”
According to the representative from the Ministry of Animal and Fisual Resources (Mirah), if a person is bitten by a dog, immediate medical attention at the nearest health center is crucial. The animal should then be taken to a veterinary service for examination and observation.
Explaining the clinical signs of rabies, he noted that an infected animal initially exhibits signs such as prostration and tingling in specific body parts, leading the animal to lick or nibble at those areas. This is followed by a stage of hyperexcitability, where the animal experiences hallucinations and becomes agitated.
later, the animal enters a furious stage, characterized by biting and drooling. Paralysis of limbs and the entire body then occurs. Once rabies is fully developed, the animal typically does not survive beyond 15 days.
The disease can be transmitted to humans through bites, scratches, or licks from infected pets, including dogs and cats.
“In tortiya, no case of rage has been reported for the moment and it is all the better but in Côte d’ivoire, a few cases of rage have been declared,” said Zonsreu Elvis, urging pet owners to increase their awareness and knowledge about the disease.
rabies is a zoonosis, meaning it can be transmitted between animals and from animals to humans.
“The anti-rabic vaccine is the surest way to protect yourself from this fatal disease.”
