Corruption Fight Lacks Political Will – Auditors Report

by Archynetys World Desk

The fight against corruption suffers from a lack of interest from the executive. This is basically the demonstration made by the Court of Auditors, in a comprehensive report devoted to the evaluation of public policies in this area over the last ten years, published Tuesday, December 9. “We cannot (…) that the fight against corruption is little valued in ministerial priorities »note the financial magistrates. From prevention to punishment, including the detection of acts of corruption, their report dissects the chronic lack of resources, on a financial and legal level, of those involved in the fight against corruption, but also the lack of political impetus and the absence of coherence of the system.

“Since 2013, the legal framework for fighting corruption has been modified more than ten times” in reaction “at national or international events”notes the court, citing the Cahuzac affair, but also the heavy fines paid by French companies in the United States (including Alstom in 2014, for $772 million, or 637 million euros at the time). The events did not take place on American territory, but Washington then considered itself entitled to judge these companies, due to the absence of criminal sanctions in France in this area.
