Drawing inspiration from the medieval corbel—a projecting architectural element used to support weight—Nick Bell Architects employed this historic principle to solve the challenge of building on a narrow strip of land with a steep slope and limited access. The result is a contemporary home that tells a story through its architecture, seamlessly baling historical elements with cutting-edge design.

Corbel House boasts a three-level layout that expands from a solid concrete base to lighter, more ethereal upper levels, mirroring the transition from earth to sky. This architectural progression is emphasized throughout the home, with materials ranging from concrete to timber and steel, all chosen for their aesthetic qualities and longevity.
The home boasts a unique cantilever design, supported by strategically placed corbels, which maximize usable space while preserving the site’s natural beauty. The design includes bespoke elements such as laser-cut formwork for the concrete corbels, a custom floating steel staircase, and a kitchen bench combining pre-cast concrete and brass.
Sustainability and Aesthetics
Corbel House is not only a marvel of construction but also a beacon of sustainable living. The home includes a full electrification system with a 36-panel solar system, 36 micro inverters, heat pumps, Enphase batteries, and a rainwater tank, ensuring that this contemporary home is designed with a keen eye on environmental impact.
The exterior of the home pays homage to its historical roots with sandstone exteriors, solid sandstone lintels, and cobblestone paving, while the interior boasts panoramic views and bushland vistas from every room, ensuring that the home is both esthetically pleasing and functional.
