Comparison of Trump Import Tariffs in ASEAN Countries

President of the United States (US) Donald Trump again shaking global trade with policies import rates The latest will be valid from August 1, 2025.

A total of 14 countries, including all ASEAN members, are included in the list of countries that will be subject to high tariffs on their exports to the US market.

Trump said this policy was part of the “reciprocal tariff” strategy to reduce the US trade deficit.

He also emphasized that the tariff can be increased or reduced depending on the bilateral relations of these countries with Washington.

Following are the details of import tariffs charged by the US to ASEAN countries:

Vietnam: 20 percent

Vietnam became one of the ASEAN countries that managed to reach a new trade agreement with the US. The import tariff that was originally planned was 46% trimmed to 20%.

In addition, Vietnam agreed to impose a 40% tariff on third country products such as China which only transited in Vietnam before entering the US market.

Main exports to the US: Electronics, Textile, Footwear, Agricultural Products.

Trade deficit with US: US $ 123.5 billion (highest in ASEAN).

Vietnam’s position is getting stronger because it is supported by special agreements and production efficiency, especially in coffee and fisheries.

Indonesia: 19 percent

Indonesia only reached an agreement with the US and was charged a tariff of 19%, down from the initial announcement of 32%.

Although exports increase, export structures that still depend on raw materials make RI vulnerable to US tariff policies.

The main exports to the US: palm oil, cocoa, coffee, textiles, semiconductors.

Trade deficit with US: US $ 17.9 billion.

Indonesia is still competing with Vietnam, especially in the coffee sector. But RI has potential in the niche market such as organic and sustainable coffee.

Malaysia: 25 percent

Malaysia was hit by a 25% tariff, up from 24% which was announced last April. The Malaysian government said it would continue to dialogue with the US, and had scheduled a cabinet meeting to discuss further responses.

Main exports to the US: Electronics, Semiconductor, Electric Products.

Malaysia managed to reduce its deficit and was considered capable of filling the market gap left by China in technology products.

Thailand: 36 percent

Thailand is still charged a high tariff of 36%.

Deputy Prime Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said that his party had submitted a new proposal to the US to open more market access for agricultural and industrial products from the US, as well as increasing the import of energy and aircraft.

Main exports to the US: Computer spare parts, rubber products, precious stones.

Trade deficit with US: US $ 45.6 billion.

Thailand became the country with the second highest deficit after Vietnam, so that it remains in the radar of Trump’s high tariff.
