Residents and business owners in the Is Coras area,near Sestu,are grappling wiht an unpleasant situation: a malodorous sewage overflow emanating from a manhole.The incident, occurring directly in front of several commercial establishments and sheds, has caused meaningful disruption and discomfort.

The issue highlights the challenges many communities face with aging infrastructure.According to the American Society of Civil Engineers’ 2021 Report Card for america’s Infrastructure, wastewater infrastructure received a grade of “D+,” indicating a significant need for investment and upgrades to prevent such incidents. similar issues are seen globally, underscoring the need for proactive maintenance and infrastructure improvements.

Citizen Frustration and Initial Response

Local resident Antonio Fadda expressed his frustration, stating that the stench has made his daily commute home a decidedly unpleasant experience. Numerous citizens contacted Abbanoa’s call center, the water management company, only to be informed that the issue fell outside their jurisdiction.

This highlights a common problem: the confusion and frustration that arise when responsibility for infrastructure maintenance is unclear. Clear lines of dialog and defined responsibilities are crucial for effective and timely responses to public works issues.

Municipal Intervention and remediation Efforts

Following citizen reports to both municipal offices and the local eco-center, the Municipality stepped in to address the problem. Emanuele Meloni, the commissioner for urban hygiene and public works, assured residents that decisive action was being taken.

I personally asked our offices for a decisive intervention thanks to the reporting both of those who live or work in front,and also of those who went to our eco -center. The sewer was clogged, then they intervened first to free it, and then to clean.

The municipal team successfully cleared the blockage and cleaned the affected area. This underscores the importance of local government responsiveness to community concerns and the effectiveness of citizen reporting mechanisms.

Navigating Responsibility: Municipality vs. Abbanoa

The incident also brought to light the division of responsibilities between the municipality and Abbanoa. While the sewage overflow was deemed a municipal matter, another recent incident involving a water leak on Via Parrocchia fell under Abbanoa’s purview. in that case, Abbanoa workers repaired the pipe after several days, and the road cut is slated for repair soon.

To ensure prompt action, residents are advised to contact the municipality directly for issues within their jurisdiction, utilizing the municipal app or phone lines. This streamlined approach aims to expedite response times and prevent future delays.
