The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) is bolstering its efforts in cervical cancer prevention through a network of 119 colposcopy clinics nationwide. These clinics provide essential diagnostic attention,treatment,and ongoing monitoring for women who have received positive Pap smear results,indicating a potential risk of cervical cancer (CACU).

To date, these specialized clinics have provided care to over 174,000 women, focusing on the identification and treatment of precancerous lesions. This proactive approach is critical, considering that cervical cancer, while largely preventable, remains a significant health concern for women globally.

Colposcopy Clinics: A Cornerstone of early Detection

Dr. Auria Viridiana Avendaño Pérez, Medical Programs Coordinator of the Second Level Hospitals Division, emphasizes the pivotal role of colposcopy clinics in the comprehensive management of cervical cancer. She stresses the importance of regular screenings at family medicine units (UMF) as the first step in prevention.

The IMSS boasts a workforce of 374 gynecologists specifically trained in diagnosing precancerous cervical lesions,prioritizing conservative and outpatient treatments whenever possible. These clinics are staffed by qualified physicians, often supported by interns, residents, and trainees, enhancing their capacity to deliver specialized care.

Comprehensive Services Offered at Colposcopy Clinics

These specialized clinics are equipped to manage a range of conditions, including suspected malignant lesions related to cervical cancer, lower genital tract pathologies such as genital warts caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), sexually transmitted infections, and benign or premalignant conditions of the vagina and vulva. Furthermore, they provide care for patients with immunodeficiencies and a history of HPV infection, among other conditions.

Each of the 119 clinics is equipped with advanced technology, including colposcopes and gynecological electrocautery equipment, enabling precise colposcopic examinations. To date, over 1.5 million studies have been conducted in these second-level units, allowing for detailed examination of the cervix, vagina, and vulva to identify any abnormalities or lesions.

Treatment Strategies and Referral Pathways

For women with lesions caused by high-risk HPV infections,the primary treatment approach is often conservative electrocautery. This method aims to remove or destroy the abnormal cells while preserving the uterus.

However, in certain cases, a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) may be necessary. Alternatively,patients may be referred to a third-level care facility for more comprehensive management,depending on the severity and complexity of their condition.

The Importance of Regular Screening

The IMSS is continuously refining its strategies to improve the referral process for patients with suspicious Pap smear results, ensuring timely diagnosis and treatment. However, Dr. Avendaño Pérez emphasizes that the cornerstone of cervical cancer prevention remains regular Pap smear screenings at primary care units.

It is importent that patients go to their first level unit to be performed by Pap Lunicolaou, since it is the only 100 percent prevenible gynecological cancer.
